- I have lived most of my life in the UK and USA. I have now come to a village in Sri Lanka, I could never have imagined I would live in. It is so different to what I have hitherto experienced. I feel I am born again and have to learn to live a new life.

I wonder whether you will be using a 'Buthaya' (what they call Combine Harvesters down near Buttala....) or harvesting by hand. Really enjoy your blog(s).

Dom See March 18 & 24 ,2009 entry for photos of the Buthaya at work on my land. Yes it is the Buthaya once again on my property as it is a hard surface, but on the adjoining property that my sister owns, I have to cut by hand as the Buthaya would get stuck in the mud, and we have to cut by hand and transport to a central spot where the "Tsunami" is used to thresh.
At present the Buthaya is Rs 9,000 per acre and the Tsunami Rs 3500 per hour. In actual fact it is a no brainer to use the Buthaya as it cuts, threshes and bags. The only drawback being that I have to take all the paddy bags to a cement drying area nearby to completely dry out before bagging and storing as I have to do, to supply my customers over the next few months transporting newly milled rice and delivering to their homes.
